I grew up in Houston, Texas. My father went to the University of Houston Law School and set the pattern for my life. Growing up with a father who was an attorney, I developed an analytical mind and questioned everything. It was almost foreseen that I would also become an attorney. I graduated from the University of Texas at Austin in 1986 with a BA degree in Political Science. Afterwards, I enrolled in the University of Arkansas School of Law. While attending law school, I was on the Dean’s Honor List each and every year and graduated in the top 10% of my class.
After Law School, I packed up all my suitcases and boarded a plane to Honolulu, Hawaii. After passing the bar exam, I walked around downtown Honolulu, passing out my resume’. My very first job was working as a defense lawyer for various insurance companies: State Farm, GEICO and AIG, among others. I would defend the insurance companies in lawsuits brought by those injured in car accidents, homeowner accidents, dog attacks, and all other type of traffic related accidents. Since I worked closely with the insurance companies and knew the insurance adjusters by name, I learned how the insurance companies settled accident claims. I learned what worked and what did not work in negotiating practices.
Because of my close relationship with the insurance companies, I knew someday that I would be negotiating money settlements with them for my own client’s injuries. After 7 years on the insurance company side, I knew deep in my heart that I should be representing injured victims and not the big bad insurance companies. Insurance companies are in business to make money, not to pay out money to injured persons. Everyone thinks that the insurance companies will be fair and just in their settlement negotiations. However, I learned that the insurance companies are not fair and are not in business to help injured people.
After a few years in Hawaii, and due to the very high cost of living in Hawaii, I decided to move to Florida. I had previously taking the bar exams in Hawaii, Florida and Colorado (I passed each bar exam the very first time) in preparation for practicing law in all 3 states. In Florida, I started exclusively representing those who were injured in traffic related accidents. I successfully represented thousands of injured victims with settlements in about 99% of my cases.
My heart had always been in Colorado. I grew up in Houston and Aspen, Colorado. I attended Aspen High School in the late 1970’s, early 1980’s. My father taught me how to ski, bicycle ride and climb mountains. My dream was always to settle down in Colorado. After practicing law in Florida for about 16 years, I escaped the heat and moved back to my beloved state. My goal was to continue with my law career in Colorado until retirement.
Settling down in Fort Collins was a no-brainer. I had visited Fort Collins in the past and loved the people, friendliness, and small town feel. As an avid cyclist, Fort Collins is a paradise. Luckily, Fort Collins has incredible cycling trails and bikeways. It is a very friendly cycling city. I frequently ride 3-4 times per week and sometimes with my club, the Fort Collins Cycling Club. We go on different group rides 2 or 3 times per week and it becomes an unofficial race at times. We do look out for each other and always obey the rules of the road. I grew up participating in endurance sports. In Junior High and High School, I ran cross country and track. In my senior year, I ran a 4:18 mile which put me number 2 in the State of Texas. Thereafter, I ran in college, but later resigned to focus on law school. I was also a professional road cyclist for a bit while attending the University of Texas in Austin. It is a tough sport with no real future in the United States.
I really love and care about Fort Collins. It has seen incredible growth recently as everyone else has discovered what we already know about Fort Collins. It is a great place to raise a family, to retire and also to start a business. Traffic problems and traffic in general have increased greatly in the last few years. It is becoming difficult for the average person to buy a house here and I do hope that real estate prices will level out and become more affordable for everyone. We have a lot to desire here, great weather, awesome outdoor opportunities, Horsetooth Reservoir, shopping, lots of restaurants, great schools for our kids, and lots of mostly friendly people.
I married a beautiful woman named Claudia who is from Medellin, Colombia. Boy did I luck out in meeting the perfect woman for me and a woman with the greatest heart one can imagine. After 14 years of marriage, we decided to have our first baby. With a lot of prayers, my wife gave birth to a beautiful baby boy, named Christopher. He is incredible and we thank God everyday for bestowing this miracle upon us. He is 5 months now and growing like a weed. We frequently take trips to Colombia so that Christopher can see his cousins and Aunts/Uncles.
I would like to conclude by saying that you can depend on me. I have the experience and knowledge to get the best settlement that is humanly possible. I take only a small number of cases at a time so that I can devote my time to your case. A lot of attorneys are out to make as much money as they can in the shortest period of time, so they take on more than 100 cases at a time. How can a lawyer be effective by taking on so many cases? I also decided that I would not charge the high fees that most lawyers charge. Basically, TV lawyers charge more to cover their overhead, employees salaries and marketing costs. I decided that I would not charge 33-45% percent and now I only charge 28% in attorneys fees when I successfully settle your case. I want to see you get the majority of the money and not the attorney. My goal is always to help injured victims put the most money in their pocket as they are the ones that are injured and suffering, not the attorney.
